History
Once known as Port Ketchum then Snug Harbor, this site was one of Grand
Lake’s Oldest Resorts
Back in 1939 when the Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees was brand new, several new
resorts were going in along the water’s edge. One of those resorts was Port
Ketchum. The land for Port Ketchum was first purchased from J.E. Ketchum by the
late Doctor William M. Finley and his wife Gay. The Finleys came to the harbor
as newlyweds and built the first cabins there...21 charming rock cottages with
the best of facilities available at the time. The Finleys lived on the premises
until 1958. Dick and Shirley Wedge bought the resort in March of 1969, and had
guests for the next 30 years. "We have guests that have been bringing their
children. It makes us feel proud that they care enough to keep coming back,"
stated Shirley. The resort was always a favorite retreat for vacationers,
honeymooners, or just weekenders from all over. The scenic view of the harbor
lined with docks and filled with boats of every description and surrounded by
gently rolling tree covered hills was, and still is, very peaceful.
In 1998, Marsha and Gary Butler purchased the Main House and several additional
cottages, and now have Summerside Cottages. It is still snuggled safely in the
protected cove just south of Ketchum, and everything is still very much as it
was in the beginning - charming, old fashioned country cottages, with a touch of
magic.
